Ask Me Anything #47: Healthy Lifestyle for Hair Growth

Hi everyone! Just a quick reminder: this information is for educational purposes only and shouldn’t influence any medical decisions. Always check in with your doctor about risks and benefits before starting any treatments.

Today, we’re going to talk about feeling stressed and sluggish and how to live a healthier lifestyle — because we know that healthy living leads to better hair!

Sleep

First up: sleep. We know we need about eight hours of sleep each night. Sleep is really important for the body to generate proteins, which are essential because hair is made of protein.

Sunshine

Next, sunshine. Sunshine helps your body produce vitamin D, which is crucial for the cells that make keratin — a key part of your hair. If you can’t get enough from the sun, you can supplement with vitamin D, which is why our super capsules include it.

Exercise

Exercise is critical for reducing stress, and we know that stressed, anxious patients tend to have more hair loss. Exercise can be anything: brisk walking, swimming, playing with your kids (as long as they’re not pulling on your hair!). Tracking your steps and activity can help you stay motivated, and a good support system boosts your mental and physical health. Studies show that a positive mindset and a good lifestyle contribute to healthier hair.

Nutrition

Let’s talk about what you eat. Iron is critical — it helps deliver oxygen throughout your body, including to your scalp, which is essential for hair growth. You can get iron from whole grains, dried fruits, and supplements. Iron is especially important for women, since periods can lead to iron loss.

Protein is also key — your hair is made of protein. So, adding more protein to your diet can make a huge difference. Meats, eggs, cottage cheese, nuts, and berries are great sources. If you’re vegan or vegetarian, protein powders like whey or pea protein can help.

Zinc is another important nutrient, found in pumpkin seeds, seafood, and eggs. Vitamin C is crucial for your immune system and for building collagen, which supports good hair. Foods like Brussels sprouts, cabbage, strawberries, and citrus fruits are great sources.

Finally, omega-3s are important for brain and heart function and also for healthy hair.

Audience Q&A

  • Hair Transplants: If hair follicles are plucked during a hair transplant, they usually grow back, especially if you’re using oral or topical finasteride.
  • Serum transferring to the face: For men, usually not a problem. For women, it can cause a little extra peach fuzz, but nothing major.
  • Combining finasteride and dutasteride: It typically doesn’t cause extra shedding.
  • Weight loss drugs (like Mounjaro/Ozempic): Shedding is likely due to rapid weight loss, not the drug itself. You can still use topical serums or pills.

Our Super Capsules

We have super capsules for both men and women, designed to make things easier. For men, they combine minoxidil (increases blood flow to the scalp), finasteride (blocks testosterone’s effect on hair loss), and vitamin D. There’s also a version with dutasteride instead of finasteride.

For women, the capsules include minoxidil, vitamin D, and spironolactone, which blocks testosterone to reduce hair loss. These combinations streamline your routine and address multiple causes of hair loss.

You can combine these pills with topicals, but we recommend not starting both at the same time to avoid increased side effects. Start one for a few weeks, then add the other.

Diet & Supplements

Beyond medication, diet matters a lot. We recommend avoiding processed foods, energy drinks, soy milk, testosterone injections, anabolic steroids, and creatine. Instead, focus on whole foods and key nutrients like vitamin D (2000 IU/day), iron, protein, and collagen.

For iron, test ferritin levels, not just basic iron, especially for women with heavy periods. Ferritin is the best indicator of iron storage.

Topicals & Irritation

If topical treatments cause irritation:

  1. Use once a day instead of twice.
  2. Apply it at night and wash it out after two hours.
  3. We can adjust the minoxidil concentration or remove retinoic acid.

We also offer an Aqua-based formula that’s alcohol-reduced, great for sensitive scalps. Reach out to us if you need help adjusting.

Advanced Formula

The advanced formula is safe but start slowly: once every other day in the first week, then daily, then twice daily.

About Our Hair Supplements

We carefully researched and chose ingredients like keratin, collagen, probiotics, vitamin D, biotin, and iron, all critical for hair growth.

Other Treatments

  • Latanoprost formula (like Latisse): Added to boost growth in eyelashes, eyebrows, and hair.
  • Laser caps: Results are mixed; about 50/50 for effectiveness.
  • Shedding: It’s normal and usually means the medication is working. It typically lasts 2–3 months. If it continues past three months, take photos and compare to see if you’re still making progress. If not, consider stopping the medication.

Dandruff & Conditioning

For dandruff, try using topicals once a day, wash after two hours, or use a scalp serum. Also, use a conditioner regularly. Leave-in conditioners should be used after shampooing.

Derma Rolling

You can derma roll every night with a 0.25 roller. It’s more effective when combined with topicals.

Topical vs. Oral Treatments

It depends! Some people prefer the convenience of an oral pill (like the Super Capsule), while others prefer the topical if they don’t like pills. Either option works well.

Skipping Doses

Missing a few days is fine. Missing months could set you back.

For topical treatments, you can use up to 1.5 ml if you’re only applying once a day.
