Finasteride

Topical finasteride is clinically proven to grow hair. Our minoxidil and finasteride topical solution results show.

Minoxidil

Over the counter minoxidil (Rogain™) is 5%. Our minoxidil is prescription strength and is 8%, for better efficacy and improved results.

Retinoic Acid

Clinical studies have shown better hair grow and improved efficacy when prescription retinoic acid is mixed with minoxidil.

Happy Head is Finasteride 0.25% + Minoxidil 8% + Retinoic Acid 0.01% compounded in a special aloe based formula. It comes in a 60ml bottle with a calibrated dropper and it is not a messy spray or gel. It is customized just for you based upon your age, sex and medical history. And as always, it is made fresh to order every month, and custom made for both males and females.

  • Topical formulation, not oral
  • Combines 3 Rx ingredients, finasteride, minoxidil, and retinoic acid
  • Studies have shown topical finasteride to be as effective as oral
  • Studies indicate possibly less systemic side effects.
  • Customizable. Our product is customized just for you, which means you can change the formula.
  • Made fresh monthly. Our product has not been sitting on the shelf for years. It’s made when you order it.
  • Special aloe base ingredient reduces irritation from minoxidil.
  • Calibrated dropper allows you to apply it directly onto the scalp; ours is not a sticky gel nor a spray that gets trapped on your hair as you spray it.
  • Both male and females formulas are available.
  • Free FedEx 2nd day shipping at no extra charge.

Yes. Happy Head is a compounded prescription medication that is CUSTOMIZED just for you based upon your age, sex and medical hair loss history. We do not believe in one size fits all. This is why you can remove some of the ingredients as you wish. You can lower the concentration of the minoxidil from 8% to 6%, or remove it completely. You can also remove the finasteride, retinoic acid or the hydrocortisone. Ours is customizable, made fresh for you monthly based upon your needs. And we promise that it has not been sitting on the shelf for years before it gets to you.

Happy Head is Finasteride 0.25%, not 0.1%. Happy Head uses the stronger version of finasteride concentration because clinical pharmacokinetic study of topical finasteride by Caserini et al. in 2015 showed that only the 0.25% finasteride produced the similar scalp DHT reduction as the oral finasteride 1mg. In other words, finasteride 0.1% concentration did not achieve the same level of efficacy in lowering scalp DHT as finasteride 0.25%, confirming the idea that higher concentration of finasteride is better than lower concentration.

Topical finasteride is a clinically proven, modern, effective method of combating hair loss with possible lower systemic adverse effects, according to clinical studies. One of the main causes of hair loss is Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT in the scalp causes miniaturization of hair follicles in patients suffering from androgenetic alopecia. Finasteride inhibits DHT formation in the scalp, reversing the miniaturization of hair follicles. Traditionally, patients would take oral finasteride for hair loss. Oral version exposes the body to unnecessary systemic exposure of finasteride. In contrast, topical finasteride is applied topically and not ingested. Research shows that when compared to the tablet form of 1mg finasteride, 0.25% topical finasteride exhibit similar remedial effects. Hence, like oral preparation, topical finasteride for hair loss works to reduce scalp and serum DHT levels, a higher amount of which is found in miniaturized hair follicles. According to clinical studies, topical finasteride may be a safer alternative to oral finasteride since it is not ingested.

Does topical finasteride really work? Yes. There are many clinical studies demonstrating the efficacy of topical finasteride for male pattern hair loss. For example, in a clinical trial study of 45 male patients, Hajheydari et al. (2009) compared oral finasteride 1mg vs topical finasteride 1% for a total of 6 months. Both the oral finasteride 1mg and the topical finasteride 1% showed statistically significant increase in total and terminal hair count after 4 months. Authors concluded that “the therapeutic effects of both finasteride gel and finasteride tablet were relatively similar to each other.” For a summary of current clinical studies, please read our blog post titled “Efficacy of Topical Finasteride: Review of Current Medical Literature.”

Yes. Finasteride is indicated for male pattern hair loss, known as androgenetic alopecia. It is a 5AR-inhibitor and prevents formation of DHT. Clinical study by Hajheydari et al. (2009) has shown an increase in terminal hair count after several months of topical finasteride use, demonstrating that topical finasteride can cause hair to regrow and increase hair density.

Yes. We do have a special, customized formula for females. The female version consists of the following active ingredients: finasteride0.25%, minoxidil6%, and retinoic acid 0.01%. Some female patients may also get the formula without finasteride. Your doctor will help determine which formula is right for you, depending upon your age and medical hair loss history.

No. Happy Head is not a spray nor a mist. In a spray formulation, the hair traps the mist and prevents the actual medication from reaching the scalp, thus limiting the result significantly. Also, sprays limited how much you will apply on the scalp. In contrast, Happy Head is a liquid that comes with a calibrated dropper. You can line up the dropper directly onto your scalp and apply the solution. It’s very easy and not messy at all.

No. Happy Head is not a gel. Gel formulations are very hard to apply to the scalp. Happy Head is a liquid that is applied with a calibrated dropper, making it easy and not messy to apply.

Happy Head is a topical formula. It comes in a solution, not a gel, and it is 60ml, lasting about a month. It is manufactured monthly for our patients. It is made fresh when you order it. This means it has not been sitting on the shelf for months, like the oral counterparts. The standard formula consists of following active ingredients: Finasteride 0.25%, Minoxidil 8%, 0.1% Retinoic Acid and 1% Hydrocortisone.

Yes. Happy Head is a CUSTOMIZED topical hair loss solution manufactured monthly just for you. This means that if you don’t want an ingredient in there, you can customize it. For example, if you are allergic to minoxidil, you can request it to be taken out. If you are allergic to the finasteride ingredient, you can remove it from the formula. You can request such changes during the checkout process. Although it is customizable, best results are seen when all of the ingredients are included in the formula, and our standard formula is the most common one written by our physicians, more than 95% of the time. It is typically recommended not to change the formula unless you are allergic to one of the active ingredients ( Finasteride 0.25%, Minoxidil 8%, 0.1% Retinoic Acid and 1% Hydrocortisone).

Clinical studies demonstrate that topical finasteride has clinically proven, evidence-based, scientific data to show its efficacy in growing hair and that it may have a lower side effect profile compared to oral finasteride. There are many side effects associated with ORAL finasteride, especially sexual side effects. There have been many clinical studies on TOPICAL finasteride. Majority of those studies showed no sexual side effects for patients using topical finasteride, sometimes at higher concentration than our formula. Specifically, out of the 7 clinical studies reported in the literature, only one study showed one event with sexual side effects (testicular pain). This is 1 out of 268 subjects in all of the studies. In contrast, oral finasteride is associated with sexual side effects in 1.8% to 3.8% of patients. One should be aware that side effects may still occur even with topical finasteride and it is recommended to titrate up the use of topical finasteride in order to avoid shocking the system and our physicians will go over that with you. Patients may have different sensitivity to the topical finasteride, thus results and side effects may vary. We encourage our users to read our blog titled “Side Effects of Topical Finasteride: Review of Current Medical Literature.”

Yes. Once you place an order and upload your photos, you will be assigned to a licensed physician in your state. You will have a consultation with your physician before starting the prescription strength topical finasteride. Your physician will determine if you are eligible for Happy Head, which is based upon medical history, current degree of hair loss, allergies etc.

According to clinical studies, with daily application of topical finasteride, the results are typically seen within 6 months of use.

FedEx 2nd day delivery.

Topical over-the-counter (OTC) minoxidil is either 2% females or 5% for males. Our minoxidil is 6% for females and 8% for males, higher dosage than the OTC versions. In addition, OTC minoxidil can be irritating. Happy Head has a special base solution fortified with Aloe Vera and other calming ingredients to reduce the irritation from minoxidil. The minoxidil is also combined with Retinoic Acid, which has been shown in clinical studies to increase efficacy on minoxidil. Finally, our minoxidil is fortified with finasteride, giving you a combination that is far stronger and effective than OTC minoxidil alone by itself.

Happy Head is made with a special base solution that is designed to be soothing in order to reduce the irritation of the stronger minoxidil in the product. In addition, aloe is added to the product to soothe the skin, along with over-the-counter hydrocortisone to reduce additional irritation. All these innovations result in a gentler formula compared to the over the counter minoxidil version. However, some patients may still be very sensitive and irritation may still occur. If this happens, we can always reduce the minoxidil concentration from 8 to 6%. we can even remove the minoxidil all together. It is also recommended to use leave-in conditioner to reduce the irritation if it occurs.

Yes. Happy Head combines finasteride and minoxidil together, streamlining your hair routine into 1 step and giving you better results. Our minoxidil is prescription strength 8%, stronger than the over-the-counter counterpart, and is fortified with Retinoic Acid for better results.

  • Patients who have had side effects on oral finasteride and want to try an alternative to oral finasteride (see our reviews of patients who had side effects on oral finasteride and had no side effects on Happy Head)
  • Patients who are fearful of side effects and want to try something that may have lower side effects
  • Patients who don’t want to take a pill
  • Patients who want to use just one product that has it all the ingredients as opposed to take a finasteride pill and still supplement with topical OTC minoxidil
  • Do I like to expose my body to more systemic absorption of oral finasteride
  • Do I like to take a pill everyday
  • Do I like to increase my risk of sexual side effects
  • Do I like to complicate my regimen by taking a pill and then applying minoxidil separately;

For patients who don’t like ingesting a pill everyday, then topical Happy Head is just for you. It’s an easy application of finasteride fortified with minoxidil and retinoic acid for better results.

Are you still taking a pill and then applying otc minoxidil to your hair? You can combine both steps into one by using Happy Head. Happy Head is a compounded formula that combines prescription grade finasteride and 8% minoxidil into one. This means that you have one less step in your hair care routine and you will probably see better results since the minoxidil is 8% as opposed to OTC minoxidil, which is 5%.
